Bio-retention Basin or Channel

Bio-retention basins can be used to carry stormwater at a controlled rate while also acting as a filter to remove pollutants and allowing stormwater infiltration. 

A well-designed basin traps and removes sediments and improves water quality via soil filtration. Peak runoff velocity is reduced as is erosion while the system will recharge groundwater.

Utilising Bio-Retention areas as part of a SuDS scheme

Bio-retention areas manage and treat water after rainfall. They are shallow landscaped underdrained pits and are used to reduce stormwater runoff downstream while also removing pollutants. 

Step-by-step of bio-retention SuDS schemes

Bio-retention applications often utilise vegetation and underdrains in order to function effectively. 

  1. Grass strip - this will reduce the run-off speeds and removed suspended solids
  2. Vegetated area - removes excess nutrients within water
  3. Shallow ponds - provides storage for excess stormwater
  4. Mulch - a layer that encourages degrading of pollutants
  5. Engineered soils - support vegetation growth along with uptake of nutrients 
  6. Sand bed - provide additional drainage and aeriation
  7. Underdrain - removal of excess treated stormwater from storm drain
